The Department of Animal Health in Alage Agricultural Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ATVET) College was established in 2001 with the establishment of the College.

Vision of Animal Health Department of Alage ATVET College is to see trained man power created who have efficient knowledge, skill, and attitude to transform the agricultural sector of the country.

Mission of the Department is to train mid level animal health professionals, in Animal Health technique and profession who have result-based and improved knowledge, skill and attitude; to give client need-based short-term training; and to establish and strengthen laboratories and practical sites that will help in giving practical trainings to Animal Health trainees.

To achieve its mission the Department gives different courses in Animal Health. The students of the Department also take different supportive courses which will help them achieve their professional objectives effectively and efficiently.

There are 6 Level I, 11 Level II, 13 Level III, and 10 Level IV courses in Animal Health. The level I courses include: Prepare for animal care work; Support animal care work; Support animal care cleaning activities; Maintain animal care workplace; Use basic tools and equipment; and Support Artificial Insemination procedures. The level II courses given to the trainees include: Work in the animal care industry; Follow OHS procedures in animal care environment; Assist with feed preparation and provision; Operate tools and equipments; Assist with general animal care; Carry out veterinary reception duties; Carry out daily clinic routine; Capture, restrain, and handle animals; Provide basic first aid to animals; Assist with Artificial Insemination procedures; and Indentify the structure, location, and function of an animal body. The level III courses include: Carry out workplace OHS procedures; Apply basic animal husbandry practices; Identify animal diseases; Carry out clinical activities; Apply basic laboratory techniques and procedures; Implement animal diseases prevention and control activities; Perform animal quarantine operations; Maintain and monitor environmental work practices; Respond to emergencies; Identify reproductive diseases and other fertility problems; Control pest and disease within a Honey Bee colony; Control of pest, predators, and diseases of fish; and Perform pregnancy test to livestock. The Level IV courses given to the trainees are also as follows: Perform animal health care; Identify and handle animal diseases; Conduct basic laboratory techniques and procedures; Control and prevent animal diseases in quarantine; Carry out veterinary public health activities; Apply drugs use techniques; Perform minor surgical and obstetrical operations; Euthanize sick, injured, and unwanted animals; supervise animal health programs; and Develop understanding of pathological lesions. The supportive courses given to the students in the college are 22 in number and include: Apply quality control; Work with others; Receive & respond to workplace communication; Demonstrate Work value; Develop understanding of entrepreneurship and Apply 5S procedures (Level I),   Next
